Parkland Memorial in Dallas Pays Former CMO $487k in Severance

Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas has undergone major changes within its senior executive team over the past year, and a recent separation agreement showed the former CMO received $487,656 in severance, according to a Dallas Morning News report.

Last year, state investigators found a range of patient safety violations at the hospital both during an initial survey and a subsequent survey. Parkland then entered into a systems improvement agreement with CMS under which the hospital must meet 400 safety mandates by April or lose federal funding. Those events led to major reorganizations within its senior leadership.

Former CMO John Jay Shannon, MD, received the severance package as well as the guarantee his legal defense related to his work at Parkland will be covered, according to the report. However, he cannot sue or disparage the hospital.

Dr. Shannon is not the first former Parkland executive to receive severance. In 2010, Parkland paid its top lawyer, Michael Silhol, JD, roughly $332,000 upon leaving. Ron Anderson, MD, former CEO, resigned last year and received roughly $303,000 to serve as a "senior advisor," according to the report.
