10 Statistics on Physician Income and Career Outlook

Jackson Healthcare, a healthcare staffing company, has released its annual study of trends affecting physicians' medical practices and careers.

The company surveyed 1,527 physicians from April 18 to June 5. According to the survey, physicians whose income increased in the past year are more likely than those whose income decreased to report the following concerning their career outlook.

  • Saying they will definitely practice medicine in 2014 (91 percent versus 74 percent)
  • Saying the outlook for a career in medicine this year is generally favorable (45 percent versus 14 percent)
  • Being very satisfied with their careers (45 percent versus 16 percent)
  • Being very likely to recommend a career in medicine to a young person (35 percent versus 11 percent)
  • Choosing hospital employment instead of private practice to focus on being physicians, not business people (41 percent versus 17 percent)
