Banner Health Network returns shared savings in performance year 2 of Pioneer program

Phoenix-based Banner Health Network's Medicare Pioneer accountable care organization increased its quality care score and achieved Medicare savings in performance year two of the Pioneer program.

BHN is an integrated system made up of employed and affiliated physicians, 14 Banner hospitals, health clinics, hospice, and home care.

The mean quality score among all Pioneer ACOs increased by 19 percent in performance year two, and BHN's quality score in 2013 reflected a gain of nearly 19 percent.

For performance year two, 23 Pioneer ACOs generated and estimated total model savings of more than $96 million, and BHN made up 16 percent of those savings.

The providers participating in BHN's ACO "are rewarded for providing holistic care to BHN's members and beneficiaries, and given the infrastructure, information and resources they need to be efficient and effective in preventive, chronic and acute care," said Shaun Anand, MD, medical director for BHN.
