Unsafe working conditions at Brookdale University Hospital to cost $78k in OSHA fines

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has fined Brooklyn, N.Y.-based Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center $78,000 after finding the hospital did not protect its workers from falling equipment and violent patients, according to a New York Daily News report.

OSHA's investigation at the hospital found more than 40 employees suffered injuries in a four-month span earlier this year. Most were injured by falling supplies or running into equipment, but some employees suffered vicious attacks from patients, according to the report.

"The facility's workplace violence program was ineffective, with many employees unaware of its purpose, specifics or existence," OSHA director Kay Gee told the Daily News.

"The safety and security of our employees, patients and visitors is and has been our highest priority," a hospital spokesman told the Daily News.

In addition to the fine, OSHA recommended the hospital add panic buttons and alarm systems at employee work systems as well as closed circuit video.
