Cleveland Clinic nurses, physicians to shadow patients: 4 things to know

Cleveland Clinic will start a new program this year in which providers, such as nurses and physicians, will shadow patients during their inpatient stay or outpatient visit, according to a HealthLeaders Media report.

Here are four things to know about the program.

1. Cleveland Clinic is launching the program to better understand patient experience.

2. Cleveland Clinic's executive CNO, K. Kelly Hancock, MSN, RN, expressed excitement about the program. She said Cleveland Clinic believes "it's important enough that it's clearly worth the investment to take those caregivers offline," according to the report. Ms. Hancock added, "We know the best feedback is from the patient. We think it really will lend itself to some great feedback to develop stronger interventions."

3. According to the report, shadowing could also help clinicians develop empathy where they could understand what patients are going through and what they care about.

4. Additionally, Ms. Hancock told HealthLeaders Media the shadowing project will help providers meet patients where they are by asking patients a question such as "What's important to you during this stay?"
