Avera St. Luke's Cuts Workforce

Aberdeen, S.D.-based Avera St. Luke's Hospital has begun offering some employees early retirement packages and has laid off other employees, according to an Aberdeen News report.

Seven to 12 employees will be affected by the workforce cuts, depending on how many agree to retire early, according to the report. None of the affected positions are directly involved in patient care.

The workforce reduction stems mostly from lower patient volumes. "We always strive to keep our staff at a level to properly match the number of patients they need to serve, while maintaining the highest level of care that our patients have come to expect. With the patient census staying lower than expectations for an extended period of time, we have had to make adjustments," said Todd Forkel, president and CEO of the hospital, according to the Aberdeen News report.
