Georgia Health Sciences University to Partner With French Cancer Institute

Georgia Health Sciences University in Augusta announced its GHSU Cancer Center has signed a memorandum of understanding for scientific cooperation with the Curie Institute in Paris, France.

The Curie Institute includes the Hospital Group, an organization that disseminates medical innovations nationally and internationally; the Research Center, which has more than 80 research groups; and the Translational Research Department.

Under the agreement, the two centers will explore various opportunities for cooperation over the next five years. The centers may develop joint research activities; exchange visiting faculty members for research, lectures, discussion and training; and develop a doctoral and postdoctoral student exchange program.

GHSU Cancer Center and the Curie Institute hope the partnership will enhance understanding of cancer through joint research and education programs and will speed the translation of research to treatment for patients, according to the report.

The partnership also supports GHSU's strategic goals. "This exciting partnership with a renowned and highly respected international institution complements our strategic priorities," said Ricardo Azziz, MD, president of GHSU and CEO of Augusta-based Georgia Health Sciences Health System, in the release.

"As we work with the Curie Institute and other global partners, we advance our mission to educate and train future healthcare professionals; to generate outstanding translational and trans-disciplinary research; and to develop a future-oriented and efficient healthcare system," he said in the release.
