Ephrata Community Hospital in Pennsylvania Begins $13M ED Expansion

Ephrata (Pa.) Community Hospital announced the beginning of construction on a new $13 million emergency department.

The hospital originally planned to begin constructing a new ED three years ago, but economic challenges delayed the project until now. At 26,000 square feet, the new ED will double the size of the current facility, allowing it to accommodate increased patient volume. The current ED was designed for 16,000 annual ED visits; the hospital expects to see more than 32,000 ED patients this year.

The new ED will include 26 treatment areas, up from the current 16, with separate areas for patients with minor injuries, patients with behavioral health needs and incoming stroke patients.

Construction is expected to be complete by December 2013.
