Chester River Health System in Maryland Plans ED Expansion

The Chestertown, Md.-based Chester River Health System is planning an emergency department expansion, according to a Chestertown Spy report.

The project would add approximately 7,200 square feet to grow the ED's capacity. The health system plans to add two general patient beds and an additional two dedicated for behavioral health patients.

The existing ED has 40 percent of the space needed for the current level of patient volume, Maryann Ruehrmund, executive director of the Chester River Heath Foundation, said in the report. The ED sees roughly 16,000 people annually, and the number of ED visits has increased by 6.8 percent so far this year. Ms. Ruehrmund said this increase is due in part to an aging population and a rising number of uninsured and underinsured ED patients, according to the report.

Chester River Health System requested a letter of support from the Chestertown Town Council for a $1.5 million bond grant from the Maryland Hospital Association to help fund the ED upgrades, according to the report.

Construction will begin in July 2013.
