Utah Seeks Approval for Existing Health Insurance Exchange

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert (R) wrote the White House requesting that his state's existing health insurance exchange be approved under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, and held as a model for other states' exchanges, according to a Salt Lake Tribune report.

The White House has not immediately responded to his request.

Utah was one of two states ahead of the policy curve when it first launched a statewide insurance exchange in 2009, a year before President Obama's hallmark Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was enacted requiring all states to run exchanges by 2014. Massachusetts also designed an exchange in advance of the law.

States looking to run their own exchange must submit a design proposal by Friday. The law also grants states until February to apply to partner with the federal government to co-run an exchange, or to have the federal government fully build and operate an exchange for them.
