Thomas Health System Medicare Members Stay In-Network After Humana Reverses Decision

Humana Medicare members will remain in-network at Thomas Memorial Hospital and Saint Francis Hospital, part of the Charleston, W.Va.-based Thomas Health System, for the rest of 2012 after Humana reversed its decision to drop its Medicare clients, according to a Charleston Gazette report.

Earlier this week, Humana dropped its ChoiceCare Medicare Advantage network with Thomas Health without explanation. Humana spokesman Jeff Blunt said in the report that Humana Medicare members "will pay no more for services at these hospitals throughout the rest of this year than they currently pay."

Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.) said he wrote a letter to Humana CEO Michael McCallister to continue its contracts with Thomas Memorial and Saint Francis after receiving hundreds of calls from concerned beneficiaries.

"This is exactly why I will continue to oppose attempts to privatize the Medicare program," Mr. Rockefeller said in the report. "Private health insurance companies like Humana continuously put profits over people to satisfy their Wall Street investors. We need a Medicare program that puts the health and well-being of seniors first."
