Maine Likely to Repay CMS for Covering Ineligible Medicaid Enrollees

Maine Health and Human Services Commissioner Mary Mayhew believes the state will have to repay CMS for providing Medicaid coverage to 19,000 eligible beneficiaries between September 2010 and January 2012, according to a Portland Press Herald report.

Ms. Mayhew said it will probably take a few weeks to estimate how much Maine will owe, according to the report.

MaineCare, Maine's Medicaid program, has had problems with its computerized eligibility and claims systems. In that 16-month span, roughly 19,000 beneficiaries received letters saying they were no longer eligible for Medicaid coverage, but they still had active MaineCare cards and accounts.
