LifePoint Hospitals' 2Q Net Income Nearly Matches Last Year at $40.3M

For the second quarter ended June 30, 2012, Brentwood, Tenn.-based LifePoint Hospitals reported almost identical net income figures, as both quarters hovered around $40.3 million.

Despite the lack of growth in profit, LifePoint's second quarter revenue increased 10.7 percent year-over-year — $827.3 million this quarter compared with $747.1 million in the second quarter of 2011. Expenses kept pace with the rising revenues, though, as they increased more than 11 percent, resulting in the slight loss.

For the six months ended June 30, 2012, LifePoint recorded $96.4 million in profit compared with $86.4 million in the first six months of 2011, an 11.6 percent gain. Revenue for the first half year of 2012 grew at a similar clip — 11.5 percent — from $1.51 billion to $1.68 billion.

LifePoint acquired three new hospitals in the second quarter of 2012, bringing its total to 55. Same-hospital figures in the second quarter included the following: a 7 percent drop in inpatient surgeries, 6.4 percent decline in admissions, 5.8 percent increase in revenues per equivalent admission, 2.9 percent growth in outpatient surgeries and 3.8 percent spike in emergency room visits.
