Taskforce Calls for Support of 4 Key Cardiovascular Disease Reduction Targets

The Global Cardiovascular Disease Taskforce, including representatives of several international cardiovascular organizations, has called on the cardiovascular disease community to join efforts to reduce CVD in a report in the Journal of American Cardiology.

The report celebrates the one-year anniversary of the United Nations Political Declaration that committed governments to develop four specific measures to address noncommunicable diseases, of which nearly half is CVD, according to the report.

The taskforce aims to build on that commitment by advocating support for reaching four top evidence-based targets on physical activity, tobacco, dietary salt intake and hypertension/blood pressure identified by the World Health Organization by 2025. These efforts aim to reach an overarching goal of reducing premature mortality by 25 percent by 2025.

The four targets include the following:

•    Reduce the prevalence of insufficient physical activity in adults aged 18 and over by 10 percent.
•    Reduce the prevalence of current tobacco smoking by 30 percent.
•    Reduce the intake of salt in adults aged 18 and over by 30 percent, with a goal of achieving the recommended level of less than 5 grams per day.
•    Reduce the prevalence of raised blood pressure by 25 percent.

The taskforce also recommended the CVD community adopt WHO's six other evidence-based targets for noncommunicable diseases.

The taskforce includes members of the ACC Foundation, World Heart Federation, American Heart Association, European Heart Network and European Society of Cardiology.
