Percentage of Adults Who Report Fair or Poor Health by Locality

The percentage of adults aged 18 to 64 years reporting fair or poor health from 2008 to 2010 was lowest among those residing in large fringe metropolitan counties (7.9 percent) and highest among those in the most rural counties (15.7 percent), according to statistics from the CDC.

Respondents were asked to rate their health status as excellent, very good, good, fair or poor as part of the National Health Interview Survey, which has monitored the health of the nation since 1957.

Results from the survey also showed, compared with large fringe metropolitan counties, the prevalence of fair or poor health was 20 percent higher in large central metropolitan counties, 39 percent higher in medium metropolitan counties, 34 percent higher in small metropolitan counties, 68 percent higher in nonmetropolitan town/city counties and 99 percent higher in nonmetropolitan rural counties.
