New York City Paid Out $135M in Malpractice Claims, Up 5% From 2010
New York City paid out approximately $135 million as a result of malpractice lawsuits in fiscal year 2011, indicating a 5 percent increase from 2010, according to a New York Daily News report.All told, the city closed out 246 medical malpractice lawsuits in fiscal year 2011. Those lawsuits include varying adverse incidences at New York City's public hospitals, including one filed by the family of a 10-year-old patient who was administered a fatal dose of oxygen following an asthma attack, according to the report.
New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation did not comment on the cases but defended its handling of medical malpractice lawsuits, claiming that the city reduced its total payouts by approximately $65 million annually since 2003, according to the report.
