Bacteria isolated from yogurt can combat MDROs, study finds

A bacteria strain isolated from commercial yogurt was able to hinder the growth of multidrug-resistant bacteria from patients in a Washington, D.C.-area hospital, according to research presented at ASM Microbe 2017.

The isolate is identified as Lactobacillus parafarraginis, a bacteriocin-like peptide. Screenings showed the isolate was able to inhibit growth of many antibiotic-resistant bacteria strains from the hospital.

"[F]indings from this study may hold promise for possible therapeutic application," said Rachelle Allen-McFarlane, a doctoral candidate at Howard University in Washington, D.C.
