American Cleaning Institute calls for FDA to re-evaluate antiseptic healthcare products

The American Cleaning Institute has submitted comments to the Food and Drug Administration, encouraging the federal agency to re-evaluate all data relevant to the safety and efficacy of antibacterial healthcare ingredients.

The ACI — an organization that is dedicated to improving health and quality of life through sustainable cleaning products and practices — urged the FDA to affirm findings that antiseptic healthcare products are truly safe and effective.

"The active ingredients used in healthcare antiseptic drug products have very favorable benefit/risk ratios demonstrated over many years of extensive use," wrote Paul DeLeo, PhD, ACI associate vice president of environmental safety. "These products clearly save lives by reducing bacterial transmission which can cause infections in healthcare settings."

Despite the considerable evidence to support the use of these products, the ACI suggested the FDA consider all existing data on the topic, identify where any data gaps exist and determine if additional safety data is warranted.
