Adverse Drug Events Increase Hospital Costs More Than $3K

Adverse drug events can add approximately $3,000 to hospitalization costs, according to research published in the Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety.

For their study, researchers assessed quality and financial outcomes for 2,100 patients who were treated within a 20-month period. In addition to an increase in length of stay of approximately 3 days, the researchers discovered adverse drug events can add $2,852-$3,650 to healthcare costs, depending on the severity. If the adverse drug event is "life-threatening," it could add up to $8,116.
