3 Large Health Systems, UnitedHealthcare Partner to Identify Best Medical Devices

Dallas-based Baylor Health Care System, San Francisco-based Dignity Health and Oak Brook, Ill.-based Advocate Health Care have partnered with UnitedHealthcare to study medical devices.

Under the venture, called SharedClarity, the member organizations will conduct independent studies on the long-term effectiveness of medical devices implanted in patients, such as stents, defibrillators, pacemakers, knee and hip implants and heart valves. Physicians from each health system will oversee the medical device studies, which will use data from member hospitals and claims information from UnitedHealthcare.

SharedClarity will use their findings to choose the best devices for patients and negotiate affordable purchasing agreements with device manufacturers, according to the news release. This venture is unique in that its studies will not be funded by manufacturers, according to the release.
SharedClarity plans to add health system members in the future.
