Washington, D.C.-based Providence Health System may scale back its obstetric care and mental health services as early as this fall, according to Fox-5 News.
The health system recently declared plans Aug. 16 to replace its 408-bed hospital in northeast D.C. with a "health village" due to an excess of hospital beds in the Washington, D.C.-area and changing community health needs.
It is unclear if the scale-back in services is related to the development of the health village.
If approved, Providence Hospital will become the second hospital in the Washington, D.C.-area to scale back obstetric services in recent weeks. The District Health Department ordered a 90-day obstetrics ward shutdown at Washington, D.C.-based United Medical Center earlier this month.
