Frank Campbell, director of patient transport at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, N.C., has been on a mission to improve patient transport times and satisfaction scores since embarking on his healthcare career, according to the Patient Flow Quarterly.

Here are four things to know about Mr. Campbell and his work at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

1. Before joining Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, Mr. Campbell joined the U.S. Army in 1975 and went on to serve in the elite 82nd Airborne Division, XVIII Airborne Corps and Special Operations Command. He eventually became a Master Parachutist and at retirement he held the highest enlisted rank: Command Sergeant Major.

2. Mr. Campbell earned his bachelor's degree and MBA while on active duty. After retiring from the army, he completed a law degree and joined the medical center.

3. Mr. Campbell applied the same approach that the army uses to develop great soldiers to his transport team. The main tenets of this approach include superior training, building self-esteem, holding people accountable and leading by example, according to the report.

4. Under Mr. Campbell's leadership, the transport team completed the National Association of Healthcare Transport Management's Transporter Certification program. And through the implementation of TeleTracking's TransportTracking application, Mr. Campbell could measure the productivity of every staff member. Armed with actionable data, he is poised to make evidence-based decisions to optimize employee efficiency and ultimately improve patient flow.
