Heart Device Provides Alternative to Surgery

Physicians at The Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon have used a ventricular-assist device to save a patient suffering a heart attack, according to a Macon Telegraph news report.

The ventricular-assist device features two cannulas, which are inserted into heart-attack patients in order to maintain ventricular function. The device allowed physicians to quickly save the patient's life without taking the patient to an operating room, according to the news report. Instead, the patient was able to receive the ventricular-assist device at the hospital's cath lab. The device also frees up physicians' time, as it allows the heart to recover on its own.

Physicians noted the devices are rather expensive and are only a short-term remedy for heart-attack patients.
