Magee-Womens Hospital opens 5 recovery clinics to treat opioid-dependent pregnant women

Pittsburgh-based Magee-Womens Hospital's Pregnancy Recovery Center opened five locations in three counties to provide opioid dependency treatment for expectant mothers close to their homes.

All patients at the Pregnancy Recovery Center, which launched in 2014, are prescribed buprenorphine, an opioid addiction treatment, or another opioid replacement on an outpatient basis. Other treatments include behavioral counseling and clinic visits.

"The benefit of being able to remain close to home while managing their pregnancy and treatment cannot be underestimated for these women," said Patty Genday, executive director of women' s services at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC. "We are now able to bring the expertise of our PRC specialists to patients in outlying areas where these services are needed the most to continue to reduce the impact that opioid addiction has on mothers and babies throughout western Pennsylvania."
