Pennsylvania Hospital Cuts Jobs

Wyoming Valley Health Care System (WVHCS), which runs Wilkes-Barre General Hospital in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., cut several positions this week and halted internal construction, according to the Times Leader report.

The system also froze hiring for 55 vacant positions. Hospital officials attribute these cuts to the economic downturn, pointing to the December report by the Hospital & Health system Association of Pennsylvania.

Overall, the cuts will amount to one-half of one percent of the system’s 3,200 employees.

Still, Community Health Systems Inc., is planning to purchase WVHCS sometime this year and WVHCS has a $100 million expansion of their emergency room planned, according to the Citizens Voice.
