IU Health System, Medical School Partner For $150M Research Collaboration

The IU Health System and Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis have partnered in a $150 million collaboration to research cancer, heart disease and neurological diseases, according to an Indianapolis Star report.

Each partner will contribute $75 million to the research project. The research money dwarfs the amount of money IU Health provided for research in 2010 — the most recent year that information is available. That year, IU Health provided the School of Medicine $16.5 million for research initiatives.

"This for the health system is largely a new investment," said Eric Williams, MD, and vice president of academic affairs at IU. "We think this is an investment for patient care."

Nearly $60 million of the total research investment will go to cancer research at the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center.
