Interesting Statistics on Consumer-Directed Healthcare

Here are some interesting statistics included in the NCHS data brief, Consumer-Directed Healthcare for Persons Under 65 Years of Age with Private Health Insurance: United States, 2007.

High deductible health plans

  • 17.3 percent of persons 65 and under with private coverage are enrolled in a HDHP (defined as a private health plan with a deductible of $1,100 or more for self-only coverage or $2,200 or more for family coverage).
  • Persons who purchased private coverage directly are significantly more likely to enroll in a HDHP than those enrolled through employers.
  • Enrollment in HDHPs did not vary by income.
  • Enrollment in HDHPs increases with education level.

Consumer-directed health plans

  • 4.5 percent of those under 65 with private coverage are enrolled in a CDHP (defined as a HDHP with health savings account).
  • Enrollment in CDHPs increases with higher income.
  • Enrollment in CDHPs increases with education level.

Flexible spending accounts

  • 14.8 percent of persons 65 and under with private coverage have an FSA for their family.
  • Enrollment in FSAs increases with higher income.
  • Enrollment in FSAs increases with education level.
