House Approves IPAB Repeal

In a 223 to 181 vote, the House members approved HR5, which would repeal the Independent Payment Advisory Board, according to a report from The Hill.

The IPAB, part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, is the 15-member panel of scientists and healthcare professionals that would be charged with managing Medicare costs. The House Ways and Means Committee and the House Energy and Commerce Committee have already approved measures to repeal the IPAB.

Rep. Phil Roe (R-Tenn.) proposed the IPAB repeal bill, which included tort reform on medical malpractice suits. The tort reform provision lost some support from Democrats, some who called the measure a "politicized" move, according to the report.

The bill will now move on to the Senate and, potentially, President Barack Obama's desk. Earlier this week, President Obama said he would veto any legislation that repeals the IPAB.
