House Prepares to Vote on Cutting Medical Device Tax Today

The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote on a bill today that would repeal a 2.3 percent excise tax on medical devices, part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act set to kick beginning January 2013.

According to a Hill report, the debate over the medical device tax has intensified over the course of this week as the House moves closer to a vote.

"The tax will undermine America's global leadership position in product innovation, clinical research and patient care, while also undermining the industry's ability to create and maintain well-paying jobs in the United States," the U.S. Chamber of Commerce said in a statement.

The American Hospital Association is concerned that the medical device tax will get passed on to hospitals and physician groups purchasing medical equipment.

Meanwhile, the White House has threatened to veto any medical device tax repeal bill that reaches President Obama's desk, according to the report.

Any bill the House passes is unlikely to make it past the Democratically-controlled Senate.
