HHS Will Not Revise Healthcare Reform Regulations

Although President Obama's executive order requires all federal agencies to revisit regulations that could be streamlined, eliminated or improved for efficiency, HHS reportedly will not be revising any regulations that implement the new healthcare reform law, according to a news report by The Hill.

In a hearing with the House Energy and Commerce subcommittee, Sherry Glied, HHS' assistant secretary for planning and evaluation, said the rules for healthcare reform are "too new for a second look" and HHS does not feel a need to review the regulations again, according to the news report.

During the hearing, Republican subcommittee members put the spotlight on several healthcare reform provisions, including waivers for specific insurers that delay implementation of coverage limits. The GOP has long criticized the provision, stating the waivers show the healthcare reform law's weaknesses. So far, 1,400 waivers have been issued to insurers.

HHS has released a proposed plan of review of all its existing regulations. The agency is now accepting comments on the preliminary plan through June 30 on its website.
