Group Purchasing Organizations Deliver 9% Annual Savings

Joining a group purchasing organization can save healthcare organizations, especially community-based and non-profit hospitals, millions of dollars each year, according to a recent Community Hospital Corp. whitepaper.

Community Hospital Consulting, the management and consulting arm of CHC, partners with HealthTrust Purchasing Group, a group purchasing organization. Joining HPG through CHC gives smaller hospitals access to specially priced, clinician-recommended products and services and supply chain management they normally do not have access to due to their low purchasing power.

"Converting to CHC Consulting's GPO saved us a grand total of $1.5 million over one year," Richard Struhs, director of materials management at Bert Fish Medical Center in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., said in the whitepaper. "When you break it down, you see savings as high as $36,000 on individual line items." And CHC says other hospitals can achieve similar savings from GPO membership — usually about 9 percent annually for most organizations, according to the whitepaper.
