BCBS Says It Will Not Cover Physician Phone Calls in Massachusetts

Responding to an earlier report, officials from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts said it will not pay for phone calls made by physicians or other healthcare providers, according to a report in The Patriot Ledger.

The previous report stated that many insurers in the state are covering for consultations made over the phone to coordinate and manage patient care, but BCBS said that it will not cover such calls.

According to the report, physicians should document the calls to BCBS, but that patients and insurance would not be charged.

BCBS also said in the report that it is moving away from a fee-for-service program in Massachusetts and moving towards a global payment system.
