Healthcare in Illinois: 10 things to know

In 2013, Illinois — home to more than 12.9 million people — was ranked 30th in state health status based on trends in obesity, smoking, diabetes and physical inactivity by the United Health Foundation.

The following 10 facts offer some insight into healthcare delivery in the Land of Lincoln.

1. All total, Illinois healthcare expenditures add up to $84.2 billion, equaling approximately $6,756 per person and roughly 4 percent of the United States' total healthcare expenditures.1

2. Adjusted expenses per inpatient day at Illinois hospitals total about $2,158 which is slightly more than the national average of $2,090.1

3. Half of Illinois residents have health insurance through their employers. Additional sources of health insurance for residents include Medicaid (17 percent), Medicare (12 percent), other private insurers (8 percent) and other public insurers (1 percent). Roughly 11 percent of Illinois' population is uninsured.1

4. The average cost of personal health spending per capita in The Prairie State is $6,756, whereas the average cost of personal health spending per capita in the U.S. is $6,815.

5. There are about 38,397 professionally active physicians in Illinois, 19,321 of whom are primary care physicians while 19,076 are specialty physicians.1

6. Illinois has 227 primary care Health Professional Shortage Area designations, the fifth most in the country.1

7. As of January 2012, there were 221 Medicare-certified rural health clinics in Illinois, the fourth most in the country.1

8. There are 142 non-federal, short-term, acute-care hospitals and 31,159 staffed beds in Illinois, according to the American Hospital Directory.

9. Among states that have expanded Medicaid, Illinois has the third highest total number of residents (572,000) who may qualify for Medicaid under the expanded qualification thresholds, according to a Families USA analysis.

10. Illinois is home to seven accredited medical schools, five of which are located in Chicago:

  • Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science
  • The Feinberg School of Medicine Northwestern University (Chicago)
  • Rush Medical College of Rush University Medical Center (Chicago)
  • Southern Illinois University School of Medicine (Springfield)
  • Stritch School of Medicine Loyola University Chicago (Maywood)
  • University of Chicago Division of the Biological Sciences, The Pritzker School of Medicine
  • University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine
