Top 10 Specialties With the Most Annual Work Hours

Utilizing data from the 2004-2005 Community Tracking Survey, researchers compiled a list of specialties in order of most annual hours worked and published their findings in Archives of Internal Medicine.

Their subsample included data on more than 6,300 physicians who worked 20-100 hours weekly and at least 26 weeks annually. Work hours include time spent in direct patient care, administrative duties and professional duties. Annual work hours for the 41 specialties studied were compared to family medicine as a baseline. Note: The report did not disclose how many hours family medicine physician worked annually.

Here is a list of the top ten specialties working the most annual hours above family practice:

1. Vascular surgery — 888 annual hours
2. Critical care internal medicine — 689 annual hours
3. Neonatal and perinatal medicine — 564 annual hours
4. Thoracic surgery — 488 annual hours
5. Other surgical subspecialties — 446 annual hours
6. Pulmonary diseases — 425 annual hours
7. Medical oncology — 340 annual hours
8. General surgery — 326 annual hours
9. Obstetrics and gynecology — 278 annual hours
10. Neurological surgery — 270 annual hours
