Premier weighs in on MACRA's patient relationship codes

Premier, Inc provided input to Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on patient relationship categories that practitioners must begin reporting in 2018 as part of the Quality Payment Program put in place by MACRA.

In the letter written to Mr. Andrew M. Slavitt, Acting Administrator for Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Blair Childs, Senior Vice President, Public Affiars for Premier healthcare alliance, addresses Premier's main concerns. Childs states that Premier generally supports the concept of patient relationship categories and codes as newer quality measures and payment models require accurate attribution of patients to providers and teams. However, Childs also states that while the revised categories are an improvement on the initial draft, Premier believes this framework will be incredibly challenging for clinicians to implement, particularly, when it is unknown how the codes will be used in measurement or payment.

Premier further believes that CMS should provide significant education on the implementation of the patient relationship categories and how the codes will be used to enhance measurement and payment.
