Physician Sentenced to 151 Months in Prison, $1.28M for Healthcare Fraud

The Office of the United States Attorney for the Western District of Washington announced that a physician and his mother were sentenced for more than 24 federal felonies related to the operation of four healthcare clinics.

Antoine Johnson, MD, was sentenced to 151 months in prison, three years of supervised release and $1.28 million in restitution for 24 counts of healthcare fraud, four counts of filing false income tax returns and five counts of illegal drug distribution. His mother, Lawanda Johnson, who also served as a business manager of some healthcare clinics, was sentenced to 87 months in prison, three years of supervised release and $1.23 million in restitution for 24 counts of healthcare fraud and six counts of filing false income tax returns.

Dr. Johnson worked at four Washington clinics — Broadway Clinic in Aberdeen and Johnson Family Practice clinics in Tacoma, Lakewood and Lacey — that were found to be dispensing a large amount of prescriptions for narcotic pain medications without examining the patient. Dr. Johnson was the only medical doctor employed by the clinics. An investigation found that the Johnsons billed Medicaid and Labor and Industries for a higher level of service than was provided.

The Department of Health also revoked Dr. Johnson's license to practice medicine.
