Former Harbor-UCLA CMO Sues County Officials for Conspiracy, Defamation

The former CMO at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center has filed a $50-million lawsuit against two county health officials who, he claims, conspired to leak news about the details of his suspension to news outlets.

Gail V. Anderson Jr., MD, was placed on paid administrative leave from the Torrance, Calif.-based hospital in August 2011 after serving the role since 1998. The suit claims Dr. Anderson was escorted from the hospital in full view of fellow physicians, staff, nurses and patients.

Following his leave, The Los Angeles Times and The Daily Breeze subsequently published stories about Dr. Anderson being personally escorted out of the hospital.

The Los Angeles Times cited unnamed sources who were familiar with the inquiry. They said Dr. Anderson was placed on leave while the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services investigated his compliance with credentialing procedures for other physicians, as well as his own credentials to treat patients.

In his suit, Dr. Anderson claims county officials Mitchell H. Katz, MD, and Hal Yee Jr., MD, deliberately leaked information to the newspapers, making Dr. Anderson seem like "a criminal and a danger to hospital staff and patients" and jeopardizing his reputation.

Dr. Anderson has demanded a trial by jury. A Los Angeles county spokesperson declined comment on the pending litigation.
