Dean of University of Missouri's Medical School Steps Down Amid Medicare Probe

The dean of University of Missouri's medical school in Columbia has announced his retirement while the U.S. Attorney's Office continues a seven-month probe over alleged Medicare violations at the school, according to Columbia Daily Tribune report.

Robert Churchill, MD, was appointed dean of University of Missouri School of Medicine in October 2009, though his tenure with the university's health system spanned more than 20 years. He will retire in October.

Two radiologists — Kenneth Rall, MD, and Michael Richards, MD — were also fired over their connection to the alleged billing fraud. Officials still have to determine the time span of the alleged fraud and the amount of Medicare funds.

The U.S. Attorney's Office – Western District of Missouri has been investigating the school and alleged Medicare violations for the past seven months.

In 1986, Dr. Rall was charged with embezzling from his business partners. He was later hired by Dr. Churchill in 1998.

The system's vice chancellor, Hal Williamson Jr., MD, said Dr. Churchill — a former radiology department chairman — did not resign out of wrongdoing, but because he hired Dr. Rall despite his criminal past.
