Northstar Health System in Michigan Joins Upper Peninsula Hospital Alliance

Northstar Health System in Iron River, Mich., has joined Superior Health Partners, an alliance of hospitals and providers in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, according to an Upper Michigan's Source report.

According to its website, SHP was founded in 2010 and is an "integrated partnership" that aims to improve healthcare quality in its region of Michigan. Northstar Health System, which includes a 25-bed critical access hospital, is the ninth hospital to join SHP. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is also part of SHP.

Connie Koutouzos, CEO of Northstar Health System, said in the report a primary reason to join SHP was the group's focus on population health management and goals of improving healthcare while lowering costs. SHP, which mostly consists of critical access providers, plans on developing and launching an accountable care organization in conjunction with employers in the Upper Peninsula.
