CHS Withdraws Offer to Buy North Carolina's Beaufort Regional Health Due to Community Reactions

Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems has permanently withdrawn its offer to buy Beaufort Regional Health System in Washington, N.C., according to a Beaufort Observer report.

Kenneth D. Hawkins, senior vice president of acquisitions and development at CHS, said the following in a letter addressed to CHS today:  "The close 5-4 vote in favorite of our proposal by the BRHS Hospital Authority Board last week was followed by strong reaction and differing opinions across the community. This issue appears to have become a divisive force among local residents, the medical community and hospital employees."

Hood Richardson, a Beaufort County commissioner and member of the BRHS Hospital Authority Board, also released a letter today. Mr. Hood said BRHS options for future management include an offer from LHP Hospital Group, an offer from University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina or the possibility of BRHS continuing to be run by the Hospital Authority Board.

Physicians and community members recently protested the recommended merger with CHS.

CHS had rejoined negotiations for BRHS in Nov. 2010 after withdrawing its bid the month prior.
