10 Things to Know About Spectrum Health Zeeland Community Hospital

Spectrum Health Zeeland (Mich.) Community Hospital is a non-profit, acute-care hospital and part of Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Spectrum Health.  

Here are 10 things to know about Spectrum Health Zeeland Community Hospital.      

1. Henry Veenstra serves as president.  

2. Ryan Powers serves as vice president of finance and system services.    

3. The hospital has 57 beds.

4. The hospital has 359 total employees.  

5. In 2011, the hospital performed 500 inpatient surgeries, 600 outpatient surgeries and 400 births, and had 15,600 outpatient visits, 14,300 non-admitted emergency department visits and 2,300 admitted emergency department visits.  

6. In 2011, the hospital recorded $91.5 million in gross charges and $479,683 in net income, according to the American Hospital Directory.

7. The hospital received a Patient Safety Excellence Award from Healthgrades in 2013.  

8. The hospital opened in 1928. It was originally named the Dr. Thomas G. Huizinga Memorial Hospital, named in honor of one of Zeeland's first physicians. The name was changed to Zeeland Community Hospital in 1956, when the hospital expanded from 10 to 40 beds.  

9. The Diabetes Center, opened in 2004, attracted 426 participants in its first year.     

10. In 1941, maternity stays were 10 days and cost $50.
