Steward Health Gets Hawthorn Medical Associates to Leave Partners HealthCare

Steward Health Care System in Boston plans to affiliate with Hawthorn Medical Associates, a New Bedford, Mass.-based physician group that is currently affiliated with Partners Community Healthcare, a physician affiliate of Partners HealthCare, according to a Boston Globe report.

The affiliation between Steward and Hawthorn will begin Jan. 1 and last for 10 years, according to the report. Hawthorn has been affiliated with Partners HealthCare for 14 years.

Hawthorn physicians will be covered by insurance contracts from Steward; many of them put providers on annual budgets for delivering care and reward them financially for better results that come in under budget, according to the report.

Steward has been rapidly affiliating with several new physician groups. In November of last year, Steward signed a deal with Whittier Independent Practice Association in Newburyport, Mass., which was previously affiliated with the Beth Israel Deaconess group in Boston. Steward has also recently signed deals with Compass Medical in South Shore, Mass., and some physicians from the Tufts Medical Center's physician network.
