Patient-Centered Medical Homes Helping to Cure New Jersey Primary Physician Shortage

The rise of patient-centered medical homes — welcomed by state insurers such as Horizon, Aetna and QualCare — is giving New Jersey a reason to hope it will climb out of a primary care physician shortage, according to NJ Spotlight.

"Students who have a passion for primary care really want to be reassured that they can do this, and still be able to pay back their loans and make a living," said Robin Schroeder, MD, interim chair of the family medicine department at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. "I really feel as though we are on the cusp of change in New Jersey."

Fueling the change are pilot PCMH programs in the state that offer better compensation for physicians. New Jersey health insurer Horizon is actively recruiting medical students to join patient-centered medical homes post-graduation. The idea is that offering better managed care and compensation will persuade new physicians to stick around New Jersey and practice primary care there.
