New York Giants to help HUMC fight childhood cancer: 4 things to know

The Hackensack (N.J.) University Medical Center Foundation, the philanthropic arm of HackensackUMC, and the New York Giants football team are launching a fundraising effort to fight childhood cancer, officials announced, according to a report from The Record.

Here are four things to know about the initiative, called Tackle Kids Cancer.

1. Officials said the initiative will feature special events such as a Monday Night Football fundraiser next month, an ad campaign featuring Giants quarterback Eli Manning and a in-store fundraising effort with Modell's Sporting Goods, where $10 from the sale of each Nike Giants Pride T-shirt in the New York metropolitan area will be donated to Tackle Kids Cancer, according to the report.

2. Robert C. Garrett, president and CEO of the Hackensack University Health Network, touted the initiative Thursday during an event in New York City. "By focusing solely on pediatric cancer and research, we are addressing the lack of significant funding provided to hospitals nationwide," he said, according to the report.

3. John K. Mara, president and CEO of the New York Giants, also touted the efforts, saying, "Over the last 40 years, the cure rate for childhood cancer has improved from 40 percent to over 80 percent, and both organizations are all in to accomplish the goal of a 100 percent cure rate."

4. According to the report,  more than 100 active oncology and transplant clinical trials are currently open at Hackensack.
