First US for-profit medical school enjoys success

Elk Grove-based California Northstate University College of Medicine is unique in more ways than one.

Here are five things to know about the school and medical education in California, according to The Sacramento Bee.

1. California Northstate University College of Medicine is the first traditional for-profit medical school in the United States.

2. In June 2015, the school was accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. By September, its inaugural class of 60 students was setting foot through the door for classes.

3. The student population at California Northstate College of Medicine is relatively diverse. Nearly 80 percent of students are California residents. More than 50 percent of students are Asian, and males outnumber females by a ratio of more than two to one.

4. Funding comes from a variety of sources. Supporters raised more than $50 million for the school, and students now pay more than $3.2 million per year in tuition and fees.

5. Out of more than 67,000 applications, approximately 1,232 students enrolled in one of California's 12 medical school programs, according to data from the American Association of Medical Colleges. Many students apply to at least 24 medical schools, according to the report.
