Are Employed or Independent Physicians More Satisfied?

Physicians who are employed and have never worked in private practice are more likely satisfied (49 percent) than dissatisfied (37 percent) with their careers, according to a Jackson Healthcare survey.

Jackson Healthcare surveyed 1,527 physicians from April 18 to June 5. Of participating physicians, 72 percent reported being satisfied or very satisfied with their career. However, the results revealed some statistically significant differences between the attitudes and traits of satisfied vs. dissatisfied physicians.

The reason physicians chose employment is also correlated to satisfaction levels.
For example, physicians who reported choosing employment for lifestyle reasons, like not wanting to work long hours, were more likely to be satisfied than dissatisfied (27 percent of those who are satisfied vs. 12 percent of those who are dissatisfied).

However, dissatisfied physicians are more likely to have chosen employment because they did not have the money to invest in a practice (26 percent of those who are dissatisfied vs. 14 percent of those who are satisfied). Additionally, dissatisfied physicians are more likely to be independent contractors or locum tenens physicians.
