ACP: Proposed ACO Rule May Set Bar Too High For Internal Medicine Physicians

The American College of Physicians has responded to CMS' proposed ACO rule, saying it supports the intent but is concerned that current requirements set the bar too high, according to an ACP news release.

Specifically, the ACP expressed concern that the proposed rule will hinder the participation of many internal medicine physicians, especially those who practice in smaller, independent physician practices.

The college recommends CMS create a "pathway for practices of varying sizes and level of practice transformation to participate in ACOs," according to the release. This includes a laddered approach to participation, providing a true up side shared savings option where providers will not be expected to share in losses, and reducing the burdens on physicians of reporting quality measures.
