5 elements of successful hospital-physician integration

Successful physician-hospital integration has the potential not only improves workflow but also lead to more coordinated, patient-driven and effective care, according to a recent Health Affairs blog post.

However, many physicians are wary of integration with hospitals because they fear they will lose their autonomy regarding their decisions on patient care. Other physicians feel they can develop ACOs and adapt to other changes in the healthcare industry better without a hospital partner, according to the blog.

Many hospital leaders are also wary of closer relationships with physicians. They fear physician practices don't have the organizational structure in place to be an effective partner, and many are new to co-managing with physicians, creating apprehension, according to the blog.

Despite these concerns, some hospitals and physicians have managed to overcome differences and integrate successfully. According to findings cited in the blog from a 2013 conference hosted by the American Medical Association, the American Hospital Association and Health Affairs, the following elements commonly occur among successfully integrated systems.

1. A clearly defined mission that emphasizes the quality of patient care. Sometimes, integrated systems will also focus on the value of care delivered.

2. A belief that everyone in the organization is equally responsible for carrying out the mission.

3. Mutual respect for everyone in the organization regardless of difference in training or experience.

4. Shared responsibility for the long-term success and reputation of the integrated organization.

5. Commitment to maintaining transparent performance evaluations and improving performance through organizationwide efforts.
