14 Wisconsin physicians launch "Popcare" urgent care clinic

A group of 14 emergency physicians from Milwaukee-based Emergency Medicine Specialists invested about $1 million to launch an urgent care clinic in Franklin, Wis., according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The physicians decided to establish the urgent care clinic, called Popcare, to help keep patients seeking primary care out of the emergency room, noting between 13.7 and 27.1 percent of ER cases could be treated at an urgent care clinic, according to data cited from Health Affairs.

Popcare is outfitted with nine exam rooms and X-ray equipment, and will be open seven days a week. The 14 physicians plan to initially staff the clinic until they can hire physician assistants and nurse practitioners with emergency medicine training to fill in, according to the report.

Emergency Medicine Specialists, which employs about 30 physicians, also staffs a walk-in clinic at Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare-Franklin. The new clinic, however, will not be in competition with Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, a Popcare physician told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
