10 Recent Transactions Between Hospitals and Physician Groups

The following acquisitions or mergers took place within the past two weeks, beginning with the most recent.

1. Oregon Medical Group, a multi-specialty group with more than 100 physicians based in Eugene, parted ways with Community Health Systems and returned to independent ownership. OMG did not disclose terms of the deal or how it raised funds to separate from CHS.

2. Tucson, Ariz.-based Carondelet Health Network subsidiary Carondelet Specialist Group acquired six-physician Southwest Heart. The terms of the partnership between the physician group and the Catholic health system were not disclosed.

3. SwedishAmerican Health System in Rockford, Ill., has acquired the Lundholm Surgical Group, also in Rockford, which will be renamed SwedishAmerican Medical Group/Lundholm Orthopedics.

4. Physicians from St. Paul (Minn.) Cardiology have integrated with St. Paul-based HealthEast Care System and will be employed by the health system. Three cardiologist will join HealthEast Heart Care, expanding the health system's heart care program.

5. St. Louis-based SSM Health Care has acquired 22 physicians from oncology and orthopedic practices. The hospital network formed the SSM Cancer Care oncology practice in January and SSM Orthopedics practice this month.

6. St. Anthony's Medical Center in St. Louis has entered into an agreement to employ physicians from The Heart Specialty Associates, also in St. Louis, to create The Heart Specialty Center at St. Anthony's Medical Center. The partnership will allow the group's 11-physicians to work directly with the hospital to improve and coordinate heart care.

7. More than 50 physicians with Oakland Physician Professional Management Group will offer advice to St. John Macomb-Oakland-Hospital, Oakland Center in Madison Heights, Mich., under a two-year management agreement.

8. San Antonio-based Baptist Health System, part of Nashville-based Vanguard Health Systems, has acquired the Heart and Vascular Institute of Texas. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

9. Fall River, Mass.-based Truesdale Cardiology has joined Southcoast Physician Services, part of New Bedford, Mass.-based Southcoast Health System. The integration of the five-physician practice with the health system will create the Southcoast Division of Cardiology.

10. Louisville (Ky.) Cardiology Group has officially joined Baptist Medical Associates, Baptist Healthcare System's physician group. The Louisville-based health system has been in discussions with the nine-physician cardiology group for approximately two years.
